SIXTY years ago Oxfam opened Britain's first charity shop and to celebrate this milestone donations that sparkle and 'diamond' volunteers are being sought for the charity's shops in West Devon. Volunteers are needed in Tavistock's Market Street store and Oxfam Books and Music in North Street, and for its shop in Fore Street, Okehampton. Donations of unwanted jewellery would help the charity celebrate its diamond anniversary with sparkle and help raise money. Jacky Theobald, manager of the Tavistock and Okehampton shops, said: 'Money raised in shops such as ours really does make a difference to those who are economically disadvantaged around the world. 'This is National Volunteers Week and we are always in need of volunteers to donate their valuable time. 'Our volunteers really are gems — the jewels in our crown. 'We welcome them and can assure them of fun and fellowship as well as making a huge contribution to Oxfam's work.' Oxfam's network of 730 shops have raised more than £500-million for Oxfam's work and play a vital role in the fight against poverty and suffering around the world.
