AN Okehampton resident is set to bring life back into the town community, thanks to the help of some friends and business contacts, with a newly not yet launched community radio station — and is now looking for help and support to evolve the project. Radio presenter Dan Rose, with a background in television filming and directing, has quietly created the community radio station Moor FM for Okehampton and the wider area in a bid to get the 'community spirit back into Okehampton'. After being involved with the town's Battle of the Bands competition, Dan decided he wanted to do something for the community and one night dreamt up the idea of the station. Having previously worked for Sky Radio, and other well-known companies, Dan had all the necessary knowledge and experience to undertake such a project. Self-funded at the moment, Moor FM is currently streaming a test transmission on http://www.moorfm.co.uk">www.moorfm.co.uk in a studio created in Dan's office. Dan said: 'We have a studio with equipment which is currently located in half of my office, so we are looking for a suitable premises for the station. We're looking into relevant grant funding but we need lots of help and support in the form of presenters, fundraisers, builders and decorators for when we find a premises. 'We want to bring the community spirit back into Okehampton. We would like involvement from community groups, organisations and charities who would like air time — not just from Okehampton but from the surrounding area too — to create a really positive community hub.' Dan said the station takes on the style of BBC Radio 2, and is personality-based and would not be back-to-back music like some other stations. There will be a wide programme variety with weather updates, travel, various features, comedy, live debates, cooking, keep fit and lots more and will have input from vets, solicitors, Citizen's Advice Bureau, councils and nurses. The team also hopes to do live broadcasts of events such as Battle of the Bands and the Tour of Britain from a satellite truck. 'We're trying to keep the production to a really high standard,' Dan said. 'We've got a test stream going out and we have most of the equipment needed, a number of ex-broadcasters and some newbies and now we're keen to train others.' Helping him on the project is former commercial producer/ producer and presenter for Pirate FM John Varker. John said: 'We have kept it relatively quiet while starting up but now we need to get out there. The station is online at the moment, but we are looking into putting it on an FM frequency. We really want this to be a shining light for Okehampton. 'If people do want to get involved, we will train them. They don't need any experience, they just need enthusiasm and a willingness to help out — with all the jobs, including decorating and fundraising.' Okehampton Primary School has said they will be involved and will be doing shows, as well as a few other community groups, and the station is looking at offering training packages to media students at Okehampton College and other groups. Dan said he had plans to put money back into the community with ideas such as recording 10 minute bed-time stories written by parents and grandparents and compiling them onto a CD of stories to sell, as well as broadcast on air at bed-time for the boys and girls. The station is looking for support in the form of premises, donations, feature ideas and anyone keen to be involved.
