THE major competition of the year at Hurdwick is the Hurdwick Hundred, which took place last weekend.
It is a 36 hole competition, played over two days, and is made up by two 18 hole medals, with full handicap allowance, but the overall winner is calculated using 3/4 handicap over both rounds.
The first round took place under awkward conditions, with the dry course making it difficult to hold the greens.
The winner was Chris Dicker with an outstanding net 65. Rodney Browne took second with 70 and Roger Downing was third with 72. The leading lady was Sally Arscott, with an excellent net 63.
The only ?two? of the day came from Roger Gallimore. The course became much easier to play on the second day, with overnight rain softening the greens and surrounds.
This resulted in much lower scoring generally and produced another outstanding winning score, with Paul Gunn achieving a net 59. Roger Backaller was second with 64 and Peter Brookbank third with 67. The leading lady was Elizabeth Raikes with 72. Jason Archer and Roger Backaller shared the ?twos? sweep.
On the day two calculation, the overall winner was Roger Backaller with Rodney Browne second and Tony Pearson third. The ladies winner was Sally Arscott.
Two other stableford completions took place and the clear winner of the first was Rex Miles, with an excellent 40 points.
Second was Phil Bryant with 35 and Ray Truscott was third with 34. In the second competition, John Burrough led by a large margin with 42 points. Second was Clive Edmunds who beat Rodney Browne over the back six holes, both with 33 points. Ray Trisect and Ernie Trimble shared the ?twos? sweep.
The final of the President?s plate was played with Tim Gale and Ray Truscott beating previous year?s winners Tim Hawkins and Rodney Browne.
The Club Mixed Greensomes competition was also played this month and was won by Ray Hurle and Rosemary Rea. The last item relates to the Present and Past Club Captains? Competition, which was won by the current captain, Tim Gale.
