A YOUNG man from Okehampton has laid the foundations for a successful career in building after being awarded the title of ?Apprentice of the Year 2004? on his brick-laying course at Exeter College. Keith Knott, 23, is in the second year of his trowel occupations (brick-laying) course and his dedication and hard work have helped him to achieve great things. As well as studying, Keith has also been getting hands-on experience working for local firm KBM Properties Ltd in Hatherleigh. As well as the apprentice award, Keith also received a certificate from the Federation of Master Builders. On Monday, November 29, Exeter College held its third annual Apprenticeship Awards. Apprentices attend college one day per week, working within industry for the remainder. Unlike full-time students, they work towards qualifications at intermediate and advanced levels while working and training full-time. The awards evening was attended by Exeter College Principal Richard Atkins, representatives of the Board of Governors, the Federation of Master Builders and Ben Clark and Rachael Hicks of Gemini FM?s breakfast show who presented the awards. The awards celebrate the achievement of apprentice students that have shown outstanding dedication and ability, or have achieved their qualifications in the face of adversity. Just one student is chosen from each apprenticeship course by the teaching and training staff to receive an award.
