FOLLOWING the success of the recent performance at St Andrews Church in Plymouth on October 21, The Ten Tors Orchestra is back by popular demand at Plymouth Guildhall on Saturday February 3 2007 as part of the Plymouth Classical Concert Series. The second programme from the Austrian Masters presents symphonies and concertos from Mozart and Haydn. Joseph Swensen's arrangement for string orchestra of Cinq Melodies will provide a romantic contrast in his sumptuous re-working of Prokofiev's work for violin and piano. Sponsored by the University of Plymouth and promoted in partnership with Peninsula Arts this classical feast will be conducted by well respected classical guru Simon Ible. The Concert Includes Haydn's Symphony No.82 in C major 'The Bear', Mozart's Violin Concerto No.3 in G major, Prokofiev's Cinq Melodies Op. 35b and Mozart's Symphony No.41 in C major 'Jupiter'. The conductor is Simon Ible — soloist is Madeleine Mitchell on violin. The Ten Tors Orchestra was launched at an inaugural concert in Tavistock in December 1998. It is now established as the premier professional chamber orchestra in Devon and Cornwall, performing a year round series of concerts in the region. The Ten Tors is a chamber orchestra of 31 professional players. A 17-piece string ensemble plus flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, percussion and harpsichord. On some occasions the orchestra is just 15 players — often that is as many as a small church venue can accommodate and on occasion it can extend upto 50 players according to the demands of the particular event. The Ten Tors Orchestra was the dream of a group of West Devon music lovers to create a professional chamber orchestra. In 1998, the volunteer steering group appointed conductor Simon Ible to spearhead the launch of the new Ten Tors Orchestra, and with public funding , a project called 'Music for the Millennium', was made possible. This was a series of ten concerts performed between September 1999 and December 2000 in small towns around Dartmoor. Eight years on and the orchestra is still going strong continuing its aim to give the communities of rural Devon and Cornwall access to live music events only previously available in the regions larger towns and cities. Tickets cost £15 and are available via the Plymouth Pavilions Box Office on 0845 146 1460 or at http://www.plymouthpavilions.com">www.plymouthpavilions.com
