THERE's an opportunity to peek inside the gates of well cared-for gardens next month, as residents in Chillaton welcome the public into their own private gardens.

Nine private gardens of varying sizes and styles, all within half a mile of the village centre, will be open to the public on Sunday, July 1 from 11am to 5pm.

The gardens range from that of a modern bungalow to a home mentioned in the Domesday book and include typical cottage gardens and even a small arboretum.

One garden even boasts a brand new duck-house, named 'Duckingham Palace', on its very own lake complete with ducklings, in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

All proceeds from the day will be shared equally between Marystow Church and Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

Organiser Deborah Asbridge said: 'This is a rare opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful gardens in Chillaton.

'Living in a rural area, people in Chillaton really appreciate the benefits that an air ambulance can bring in an emergency, so we welcome the opportunity to raise funds for this worthy cause as well as to support our parish church.'

As well as enjoying the gardens, visitors will also be able to take advantage of the refreshments served all day, including tea, coffee, light lunches and afternoon teas.

There will also be plant sales, craft stalls and exhibitions by local artists and award winning photographs by Launceston Camera Club and a raffle.

Tickets are available in advance from Deborah Asbridge on 01822 860378 at £4 per adult and free for children under 16 accompanied by an adult.

Tickets will also be available on the day in the Square or at any of the gardens.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads.

A map showing the locations of all the gardens will be provided when tickets are purchased.
