THE past month has been a hugely successful one for Tavistock Golf Club. For the first time in its 118-year history the club held an open day. Club manager/secretary Jonathan Coe said the day was a tremendous success, far exceeding the numbers expected.
'In excess of 120 people have joined the club as a result of the day,'he said. 'We hope that those who have joined will enjoy many happy years' golf at Tavistock. I would like to thank all those local businesses who supported the club by placing an advert in the campaign leading up to the open day.'
Another major success by the club was the winning of the Dartmoor Pony Trophy for the first time since its inception 13 years ago. This annual match between Tavistock, Teign Valley, Yelverton, Wrangaton, and formerly Okehampton, was conceived by Sue Pearman of Teign Valley for moorland courses.
Results were close, Tavistock had a total of 220 points, three more then Teign Valley with Yelverton and Wrangaton tying third with 205. George and Nicky Gawman of Tavistock won the best individual pair score with a magnificent 43 points.
Chris Gawman, now down to a 5 handicap, is having a great year as junior captain. Chris won the junior club championship, beating Sam Brockington and, with partner Paul Waddle, also winning the junior foursomes matchplay.
In a closely fought men's club championship George Gawman and Alan Gawman scored 10 birdies between them, Alan eventually winning on the 18th.
In the ladies' club championship between Bev Ruth and Belinda McSherry both played magnificent golf to the delight of the many supporters. The game went to the 20th hole which Belinda won to become the 2008 ladies' champion.
In the ladies monthly stableford, played in conjunction with the Allen Candlesticks, Ruth Myott had 39 points on countback from Ginny Samborne with Kate Harding coming third with 35 points. The Allen Candlesticks was won by partners Belinda McSherry and Fran Horton with the joint score of 71 points.
In the men's mid-week stableford Rod Hillman in division 1 had 41 points with Phil Gawman on 39 points coming second on countback from Ross Bryant.
Division 2: 1st Ian Bellam with 36 points on countback from John Thewlis; 3rd Graham Kelly 34 points.
In the RNLI Medal - Div 1; 1st Brett Mannering with nett 69 on countback from Ross Bryant; 3rd John Harding nett 72. Div 2: 1st Will Spearing nett 69, 2nd Gareth George nett 70, 3rd Monty Congdon nett 71. Div 3: 1st Callum McCormick nett 72, 2nd Paul Vickers nett 73, 3rd Frank Hughes nett 74.
