TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club members who turned out to watch the semi-finals of the men's doubles competition were treated to an enthralling match which saw the duo of Brian Preece and Roy Northam beat Clive Jago and Pat Smith by one shot when picking up a one shot win on the 21st end, to take the match 23-22.
The men's section played three matches during the week, winning one and losing two.
Monday's match at home to a retired Civil Service team ended in a 103-98 win for the Tavistock men, thanks to them winning on three of the four rinks played and drawing the fourth.
Winning skips were Ron Cooper and his squad of George Barrand, Ernie Piper and Tony Coombs, who won 25-12. Skip Bernie Downs and his team of David Parry, Gerald Worth and Wallace Northey won 22-18, while skip Mike Allen led his team of Vic Doidge, Henry Lovell and Derek Bradford to a 27-20 win.
Skip Der Saunders saw his rink draw 18-18 and skip John Smith witnessed his rink losing 10-30.
Thursday's match away to a Civil Service team saw the Tavistock men lose on all four rinks to go down 47-96.
Friday's match against City Bus resulted in another comprehensive defeat for the Tavistock men, who lost 62-86. Tavistock's only success was on the rink skipped by Mike Allen which achieved a draw (19-19), thanks to excellent bowling from Brian Preece and Phil Jury. The remaining three rinks were well beaten.
The ladies' section played three matches during the week, winning two and losing one. Wednesday's match away to Victoria resulted in a win for Tavistock, thanks to skip Jean Flay and her team of Jill Lacayo, Yvonne Meneer and Marion Allen, who won 36-10.
Skip Freda Issac saw her team of Joyce Drew, Anne Doidge and Catriona Meek win 33-6, while skip Henny Bawden witnessed her rink lose 16-19.
Thursday's match against Ivybridge resulted in a 48-24 win for Tavistock ladies, thanks to a 23-12 victory by skip Jean Flay and her team of Hazel Lovell, Joan Northey and Joan Solly. Skip Marion Allen saw her team of Jill Saunders, Anne Doidge and Marlene Paramore win 25-12.
Friday saw a reversal of fortunes for the ladies who lost to Buckfastleigh, with skip Marion Allen losing 18-22 and skip Jean Flay going down 21-30.
