A UNIQUE event takes place in Buckland Monachorum Village Hall on Friday March 6 at 7.30pm when local historians Stephen Fryer and Bernard Mills get together to give a talk on the history of the two railway lines that once served Tavistock.

Entitled 'Two Routes to Tavistock' the evening begins with Stephen recalling the history of the Plymouth Devonport and South Western Junction Railway, which ran from Devonport to Lydford via Bere Alston and Tavistock (North) Station.

Then, Bernard will take over for the return trip down the Great Western Railway's route from Lydford, through Tavistock (South), Yelverton and back to Devonport.

This is a not-to-be-missed event for local history and railway lovers alike.

Stephen Fryer's book 'The Building of the Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway' was published in 1997 and has been the basis for talks for a number of years. Bernard Mills is a well-known local railway historian who has been recording the history of railways far and wide all his life and has published a number of books on railway history.

The show is being staged on behalf of Buckland Monachorum Village Hall Management Committe, to provide local entertainment and in the process, raise funds for the upkeep of the hall.
