IF you are a Sherlock Holmes fan and fancy tracking down some of the great man's memorabilia now is your chance.

A fine collection of items relating to author Conan Doyle and his famous detective — which was housed in Princetown — is now up for auction.

The collection includes film posters, manuscripts, books, pictures, pipes — even a life size figure of Holmes wearing his celebrated deerstalker and a Victorian cell door from Dartmoor Prison.

Peter Keen, auctioneer at the Plymouth Auction Rooms where the sale will take place on Wednesday, September 20, said the items would create a lot of interest from collectors and dealers.

'There is a lot of local interest because Conan Doyle lived in Plymouth's Durnford Street for a while and he wrote the Hound of the Baskervilles in Princetown,' he said.

The collection was originally on view in Morwenna House, Princetown but after the premises were sold the museum was closed and the items are now being put up for sale by the current owners.

'I estimate there will be a couple of hundred lots and most will be sold at between £20 to £30 per lot,' said Mr Keen.

He said the museum possibly grew out of a small collection of memorabilia which just got bigger.

'It is a pity the collection is going to be broken up because when you see it all together it is very impressive.

'The value is in the tremendous interest.

'But the good thing is that now it is coming up for sale it provides the rare opportunity for collectors to enhance their own Sherlock Holmes collection,' he said.

Elementary, my dear Watson.
