MAY I add a little to your report on the discovery of a copy of R N Worth?s Tavistock Parish Records in the Times of May 29?
The Tavistock Subscription Library has had a copy for many years with a comprehensive index supplied by a member.
The library was established in 1799. For many years it occupied the top floor of Court Gate, recently taken over by the town museum. It now has a comfortable reading room on the ground floor where the shelves are packed with books of local interest including works by local authors. The honorary secretary, John Gale, can be contacted on telephone 01822 890293, [email protected]">[email protected]
May I also point out that the lease document of 1667 may have been signed by the grandson or great-grandson of Sir Francis Drake?s brother Tom or another family member. Sir Francis died of a fever ? probably the dread yellow fever ? years earlier, on January 27 1596 in the south Caribbean Sea while on a foray for Spanish treasure.
