RECYCLING in West Devon has been recognised with the borough council being selected as one of three finalists in a nationwide awards event.
The borough is one of the finalists in the best improved recycling rate category in the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee Celebration Awards. The awards recognise the dedication, success and achievements of local authority recycling officers, their teams and partners.
The council's recycling and composting rate grew from 44% in 2009/10 to an average of 58% after the introduction of the new scheme, with 62% achieved in the most recent quarter. This is the second time West Devon's new recycling and refuse service has been shortlisted for an award. The service was shortlisted for a plant and waste recycling award in June.
Following a borough-wide consultation, the council developed a new service, allowing for the collection of ten recyclable materials, including food, every week. The operations for the service are contracted to FOCSA Services UK Ltd.
Cllr James McInnes, Leader of West Devon Borough Council said: 'Our environment services team continuously innovate, problem solve and communicate with our customers in order to provide a reliable and cost-effective service. It is wonderful to see their efforts, and those of our residents recognised at a national level.'
Jane Savage, waste contract manager for the borough, said: 'These awards are quite prestigious in the waste industry and it is extremely gratifying to know that the efforts of councillors and staff have been recognised at this level. However, let's not forget West Devon's residents — without their support for the new scheme we wouldn't be here.'
