Honiton 10
Okehampton 17
WITH a break from league rugby Okehampton travelled to Honiton for a fixture that proved to be anything but friendly.
All credit must go to the players who kept their heads, won the game in a convincing fashion and managed to leave the field without any serious injuries.
Okehampton dominated the first half with some impressive back play, time after time creating space out wide for Buz Brimacombe on the left wing and the impressive Dave Wills on debut at full back.
Brimacombe was first to cross the line following some excellent quick handling from Griffith and Muggliston to give the young winger a 40-metre run in down the touchline.
Dave Wills added a second with a move off the training field, Dave Bickle drawing the Honiton defence and feeding the full back through the gap at pace.
Brimacombe added a second in the first half in similar fashion to the first with Richard Drake linking into the back line from the flank creating space for the winger out wide.
The second half proved to be less entertaining with the home side beginning to show their frustrations on the pitch.
Okehampton could and should have scored on numerous occasions to take the game out of sight, but were kept at bay by some basic errors and determined defence.
It was a basic defensive error which allowed Honiton a consolation try they had not looked like scoring, crashing through from a quick tap penalty.
The victory was more convincing than the scoreline may suggest and Okehampton should have piled on the points in the second half through their dangerous backs.
This week Okehampton face South Molton at home in a league local derby. Only a win and two points will be acceptable against the Western Counties strugglers.
