ONE business that has certainly gone to the dogs — and proud of it — is the Retreat Canine Hydrotherapy in Okehampton.

If you have a poorly pet then The Retreat offers complementary health treatment for man's best friend and could be the place for your Fido to restore or promote his fitness with a spot of hydrotherapy.

The business in Tavistock Road opened in May this year.

Their clients include dogs which require rehabilitation due to suffering from an ailment, such as arthritis, or who are recovering from an operation; agility dogs and show dogs, as well as dogs who just enjoy swimming or who are learning to swim are all welcome (puppies are swam from 12 weeks).

Dogs of all sizes can enjoy the experience from Yorkipoos to Bernese mountain dogs.

Dog owners need the permission of their pets' vet before being accepted and each canine client has its own 'bespoke' treatment plan.

The Retreat is run by Duncan Croad, a qualified canine hydrotherapist, and his wife Helene.

Helene told the Times: 'Our interest in canine hydrotherapy arose while my husband was volunteering for a charity called Labrador Lifeline in Hampshire. We "fostered" one of the charity's dogs — Lulu, a Labrador cross, who had extremely poor muscles in her hind legs, which made everyday tasks difficult for her.

'Swimming really helped improve her muscle tone. Shortly after arriving, Lulu decided to adopt us and she is now a regular swimmer!'

The Retreat's hydrotherapy pool is one of the largest in the South West. measuring 9 x 4 metres and is heated at 28-30 degrees.

Helene added: 'Hydrotherapy has been shown to benefit many health conditions including arthritis, chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy, cruciate ligament injuries, hip and elbow dysplasia, obesity, paralysis, soft tissues and spinal injuries and spondylitis.

'A properly followed programme of activity can result in improved cardiovacular fitness, increased mobility, less pain, swelling and stiffness, recovery from fractures and neurological damage as well as weight loss.'
