OKEHAMPTON Police are warning that people are parking dangerously around the primary school in Glendale Road.

PCSO Lisa Smith said there was a particularly problem with erratic parking close to the roundabout at the entrance.

‘Police would like to remind people that parking in such a way is an offence of unnecessary obstruction on the highway, which could be liable for a £100 fine,’ she said.

‘Civil enforcement officers have the power to issue fixed penalties to people parking on zigzag lines, single and double yellow lines and bus stops etc and they will be informed of the problem so that patrols can be carried out in the area.

‘The reason the parking restrictions are in place around the school is to keep the roads a safe place for pedestrians, particularly small children as they travel to and from the school.’

She said Okehampton PCSOs regularly attended school assemblies, nursery schools and other community groups for young people to deliver road safety talks.

‘It is then the responsibility of those parents, carers and members of the public who support young children to assist with this by parking legally in a safe manner and to look out for their safety,’ she added.
