MUSIC made people smile when the pupils of the Okehampton Music Centre performed to a packed house at the Octagon Theatre at Okehampton College last Thursday night.
The centre, which offers children musical lessons at a modest cost, celebrated the end of its third year with performances from instrumental sections, the choir and, for the finale, an orchestral piece specifically arranged for the music centre pupils.
There were plenty of smiles from the young musicians who were clearly proud of their polished performances which showed just how much progress they had made.
Family and parents were joined in the audience by representatives from the Okehampton United Charities, which along with the Devon Music Education Hub supports the charity. Okehampton Mayor Jan Goffey, Allenton and Jean Fisher and Karen Percival were all in the appreciative audience.
Also welcomed to the event were prospective pupils who came to watch the concert and take advantage of the chance, after the concert, to try out some of the instruments and register for a place starting in January 2018.
‘It was lovely to see current members sharing their enthusiasm with new pupils, and we look forward to welcoming our new intake in January,’ said Heather Parks from not-for-profit SW Community Links, which is behind the Okehampton Music Centre.
‘The Okehampton Music Centre aims to give all children and young people the opportunity to learn an instrument, and get more involved with music.
‘The benefits of engaging in music are well-documented, with scientific research showing that playing an instrument gives a ‘whole brain workout’. Studies show that it can improve focus, memory and academic achievement. Most importantly, it is fun! It can also help with the transition to secondary school.
‘Many pupils have said that belonging to the music centre helped make starting Okehampton College easier as they had already made friends with college pupils and peers from other schools, as well as being familiar with the site and teachers.’
Thanks to funding from Okehampton Untied Charities and Devon Music Education Hub, the music centre offers instrumental lessons, orchestral workshops and choir from as little as £1.50 per week for pupils in Years 3 to 9.
They also welcome older student volunteers who act as mentors in the workshop and choir. A few places remain for new starters in January 2018. Find out more on 07808 523111 or email [email protected] for an application form, which needs to be returned by Monday, December 11.
