A VISIT to the Kan Geiko weekend Judo course at Bridgwater Somerset gave local Judoka an opportunity to test and prove their skills.
In the U16s junior competition Okehampton's Aidan Bostock, aged 13, won gold, winning all his contests. Ryan Spooner, aged 14, from neighbouring Tedburn St Mary Judo Club won silver in the same group.
In the lighter groups Mike Crowhurst, 13, and Ella Percival, 10, both won all their contests for gold; Ellie Cawse, 11, and Levi Dove, 11, took bronze while and in the U10s competition Sam Cawse, aged nine, won silver.
At the Area Grading the following day Mike Crowhurst won all his contests and graded up to green belt with three blue tabs; Aidan Bostock won all his contests and graded up to green belt with one black tab; Eddie Chatterton in his first contest grading won his senior blue belt and Jenny Codling was awarded blue belt.
Sensei Allen Carter was awarded his black belt, second Dan, after fighting in a pool of second Dans — throwing one for a wazari score and another for a spectacular contest winning ippon. Ryan Spooner has been graded up to green belt, two brown tabs.
Darren Bostock of Okehampton Judo Club said: 'Judo is a great way to build confidence, self control and respect. We teach traditional Judo and its values and welcome visitors of all grades and organisations into our dojo.'
