VOLUNTEERS, local businesses and youth groups came together at the Charter Hall in Okehampton on Saturday for a ‘thank you’ for their part in the annual poppy collection.
West Devon deputy mayor Tony Leech joined Okehampton deputy mayor Julie Yelland and Okehampton Royal British Legion chair Peter Woodward to present certificates for five, ten and 15 years’ service as well as an impressive 50-year brooch to dedicated individuals.
Representatives from the town’s post office and army and air cadets were also thanked for their part in the collection in the town each year.
The presentations took place during a World War One-themed coffee morning held in the Okehampton Charter Hall.
Supported by Okehampton Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs, the morning was very well attended by the public, who were able to browse many photographs and information about Okehampton and the hamlets during the 1914-1918 period.
Various local businesses made kind donations towards the raffle, helping to raise £513 for RBL causes.
Pat Martin of Lydford was presented with the special brooch as a thank you for taking part in poppy collections in the area for an amazing 50 years. Meanwhile Mary Jordan received a 15-year certificate, Ray Rattenbury, Rosemary Lowe and John Mills were presented with ten-year certificates and Margaret Woollacott with a five year one.
Certtificates of appreciation were also presented to Okehampton post office, the air cadets and the army cadets in recognition for their longstanding support.
Mr Woodward said: ‘It was a privilege for our branch to recognise the work that our volunteers carry out each year raising vital funds for the Poppy Appeal. It was even more special for me to see the presentation of a 50-year brooch for service. That is true dedication.’
Local poppy award officers Wendy Oliver and Sqn Ldr Andy Oliver, who organised the event, thanked the businesses, groups and individuals who made the event possible.
The legion was founded by veterans after the First World War and almost a century on, they are still helping today’s servicemen and women, veterans and their families in almost every aspect of daily life.
The RBL also honours the memory of those who have given their lives for our freedom through remembrance education and events.
