A CHARITY golf day held at Okehampton Golf Club earlier this year has raised more than £5,000 for Rowcroft Hospice.

Fifteen teams played 18 holes of golf on July 7 and enjoyed food and drink in the clubhouse afterwards.

The event was organised by Helen Holman, who decided to raise funds for the hospice after losing her father to cancer in July 2016.

She said: ‘On the morning Dad died, we received a letter from Rowcroft telling us that some of their services were going to be stopped due to insufficient funding.

‘My dad’s wish was to stay at home for his final days so we, as a family, did everything we could to look after and care for him but we would not of been able to do this without the help of the nurses and carers from Rowcroft.

‘They were always there if we needed them, and their care and support during the tough times was invaluable — we would never of managed without them. The services they provide are much needed by the community they serve.’

Community fundraising officer for Rowcroft Hospice Debbi Shotton said: ‘This is such an amazing amount to have raised and it means so much to our patients and their loved ones. Over 70% of our funding comes from the incredible generosity of our local community. ‘Without them we would not be able to continue to care for over 2,000 local patients and their families every year and help them make the most of every moment they have together.’

Barclays Bank organised a raffle and Joyce Campbell provided jams and marmalades to sell on the day.

Helen expressed thanks to everyone who took part, helped with and supported the golf day. She also thanked Barclays Bank and CBL Plant Hire for their support.

The event raised a grand total of £5,161.04 for the hospice.
