OKEHAMPTON Judo Club members enjoyed great results at the latest grading session.
The following students were successful in improving their grades at recent club gradings: Primaries (under 10years) Sam Cawse, one green tab; Nathan Bostock, one green tab; Alfie Budd, two orange tabs; Tom Short, three red tabs.
Juniors (U16yrs) Levi Dove, yellow belt, three orange tabs; Ella Percival, yellow belt, two orange tabs; Erik Van Riel, three yellow tabs; Oliver Waldron, three yellow tabs; Ellie Cawse, two yellow tabs and Jasmin Pitts, two yellow tabs. Seniors (16yrs and over) Dave Wills, third Kyu; Geoff Cawse, third Kyu and Eddie Chatterton, third Kyu.
Coaching qualifications: Geoff Cawse, Eddie Chatterton and Aidan Bostock from Okehampton Judo Club and Jenny Codling and Richard Carter from Tedburn St Mary Club successfully completed fundamental principles of Judo level one coaching courses with the British Judo Council chief examiner Akinori Hosaka Sensei, who is an eighth Dan Kodokan grade.
Darren Bostock, Sensei second Dan, who took over Okehampton Judo Club in September last year and is qualified as a level two coach said: 'We now have a strong coaching team with the ability to teach larger numbers of students all aspects of Judo and we'll be placing special emphasis on Ippon Judo quality technique, traditional values and strict etiquette.
Darren thanked the seniors and Aidan for their help with grading and coaching the juniors, and also Jenny Codling and Allen Carter Sensei from Tedburn St Mary Club for their help and support.
'There is no Judo until after the summer break back, on Monday, September 8. Judo is a great way for children to build self confidence, control and respect. We welcome visitors of all grades and organisations into our Dojo. Okehampton Judo Club meets at Fairplace Church which has supported the club for many years, every Monday evening excluding school holidays, Juniors start 7pm until 8pm and Seniors from 8 until 9.30pm.'
