SCHOOLCHILDREN in the Okehampton area are being invited to enter a poetry competition to celebrate St George's Day on April 23. A national children's poetry competition is being organised by the Enjoy England campaign to promote the festival — and Okehampton has taken its lead from this, and organised its own local competition. Prizes for the West Devon contest will include £150 for the winning school, a 'challenge day' at Okehampton Youth Hostel for the winning class, and a bicycle, and awards of £50 and £25 for the winning entrants themselves. Poems for the competition should be a maximum of 40 lines long, and on the subject of what living in England means. That can include English traditions, places, figures, or foods. Five classes at Okehampton Primary School are entering the competition, and are now busily honing their entries — and it is hoped that other classes in the area will also submit poems. For further information please contact Derek Godfrey Brown on 01837 53158. Entries should be sent to Larkbeare, Okehampton, EX20 4NL by April 20.
