Okehampton 2nd XV 86

Callington 0

IN classic autumnal conditions the Super 2s' perfect start to the season continued in emphatic style at Oaklands Park on Saturday.

On a rare break from the formalities of league rugby, the side was able to enjoy a friendly fixture against a Callington side that last year took the decision to remove itself from the current league structure and play friendly matches only.

It is a measure of the spirit and ethos of Callington that despite not being able to raise a full side to travel, they fulfilled the fixture and by borrowing a number of Okehampton players some 35 individuals were able to enjoy a game of rugby.

The home side started the game playing down the slope and with the wind at their backs. It was not long before centre Robert Fishleigh scythed through the opposition defence to score near the posts. Buzz Brimacombe added the extras and Okehampton were seven points to the good.

The visitors were giving a good account of themselves in the forwards but when the ball was moved wide they were having difficulty in dealing with the pace of the home side and Brimacombe soon scored the second try of the afternoon which he again converted to bring the score to 14-0.

The scores then started to come thick and fast although Callington never gave up. At half-time a number of Okehampton players pulled on the green shirts of Callington and playing with the elements matters became more even.

Okehampton's further tries came from Alex Taylor (3), David Wills (2), Tom Powell, Phil Harding, Steve Richards, Steve Alford, Simon Griffiths (2), and the evergreen Adam Curtis.

This was an advert for the true spirit of the game and a salient reminder that the traditional values of the game still exist.
