ALTHOUGH heavy rain resulted in the cancellation of its sports programme for Sunday OCRA were able to continue with a presentation to past chairman, Peter Hammond, in recognition of his long and successful service to the development of community sport for Okehampton and the surrounding villages. Jerry Stephens thanked Peter for his considerable service to OCRA since its inception in the late 1980s and for his period as chairman for more than 15 years. On behalf of all who had known Peter during this time Jerry presented him with an engraved glass bowl depicting various sporting and recreational activities surrounding the OCRA logo. During the time under Peter?s chairmanship OCRA has been influential in the provision of community sports and recreational facilities for all ages throughout the Okehampton area. Peter?s vision has enabled OCRA to promote and develop the current Sports and Fitness Festival, the various recreational school holiday schemes for children and its involvement in the 5x30 fitness initiative for all age groups. Peter?s input has meant that the Okehampton district is at the forefront of promoting community recreation and the concept of health related fitness for all ages. Current chairman David Carter thanked Peter?s wife Angela for all her support as without her help neither Peter nor OCRA could have achieved the successes of the past years. Peter and Angela thanked Jerry and all those present for the glass bowl and flowers. Peter observed that the current trustees and committee were maintaining the concept of providing affordable sport and recreation for all - a cornerstone of OCRA?s aims. He wished OCRA continuing success for the future. Anyone interested in supporting OCRA in its community based activities can always contact Stuart Lord on 01837 54546 or David Carter on 01837 840521.
