THE squash club in Okehampton is the latest venture to be helped by the Okehampton Community Recreation Association (OCRA) in obtaining funding for sports development.
In 18 months OCRA has helped secure £20,000 for sports projects in Okehampton through the Awards for All scheme.
Manager of OCRA Stuart Lord said the aim was to broaden participation in the wealth of sports clubs and groups currently operating in the town.
?In the case of the squash club, the youth section is the part which is being developed and this is something we always like to encourage,? he said. ?The clubs will constantly improve if we can continue to build up the numbers of people participating.?
Stuart, who can be contacted on 01837 54546, is working alongside the sports development officer at West Devon Borough Council Ian Hancock, who can also be contacted for advice and help on 01822 813600.
?There is an amazing amount of interest in sport in Okehampton and that is terrific but to help clubs on their way, the Awards for All scheme, which offers grants up to £5,000, is a really good one,? added Stuart.
?We have been quite successful in the past so if anybody wants some financial help to develop their club or even start up a new one, please get in touch with us.?
OCRA, which operates from the Community Education Department at Okehampton College, is starting basketball sessions at half-term and will also be running its regular sports and arts days.
