TAVISTOCK, firing on all cylinders from the kick off, notched up an impressive points tally to win away from home. The forwards played as a unit recycling quick ball from rucks and controlling the ball tactically from the back of mauls. Tries were scored by Mark Kerswell (captain) , Ewan Smith (2) Jack Hodges , new boy James Shaw and a penalty try by Chris Bray.

Both Chris Angells playing flanker and James at second row were men of the match for their excellent positional play and direct purposeful running with the ball.

Jack Hodges and Ewan Smith demonstrated their skills at balanced running and drawing their opposite numbers away from the line of attack both linking up well with Chris Bray , Ewan McCall and Chris Dawe at fullback.

The pack demonstrated their new found power drilled by their new technical coach Robin maintained even after the loss of Tom Haigh due to rib injuries sustained just before half time.

Most of all the game was a tremendous team effort lead by example from the front by captain Kerswell.

A LARGE crowd saw Tavistock record their second league win of the season at Sandy Park on Saturday.

Tavistock absorbed the loss of a number of key forwards in the week before the game and in the case of Tom Hurdwell warming up just before, to record a sound if unspectacular victory. Matt Martin who replaced Tom in the front row had a sound game in his first league start and demonstrated the grit and determination needed to play in the front row at this level.

Tavy got off to a reasonable start testing the Tiverton defence but were to fall behind to a penalty from Tiverton full back Steve Cockram. However Tavy replied with a penalty from fly half Josh Sutton to even the scores.

Tavy then grabbed the initiative and scored three tries before half time, but they did allow Tiverton to get back into the game at the end of the half.

The first Tavistock try was created by their backs. Duncan Law taking a pass from Josh Sutton slid a kick through the Tiverton defence for full back Mark Baker to run onto and score.

Tavistock then applied pressure through the forwards where number eight Andrew Griffiths made ground providing a target for other payers to run off and the point for rucks and mauls.

From this pressure Tavistock forced an attacking lineout and following a catch and drive from a lineout scrum half and skipper Lee Greatrex got the second try when he burst away from a maul to score.

The final Tavistock try of the half came from centre Duncan Law who used his pace and power to run through virtually the whole Tiverton team to score. Josh Sutton converted two of the tries.

The second half was a far tighter affair with each side only able to get one score each. Tavistock went nine points in front early in the second half when Ben Neal scored on the left after the ball had been moved wide by the backs.

The remainder of the half saw Tavistock defending and the defence held firm until the last move of the game when Cockerham scored a try close to the posts, which he converted himself.

Next Saturday Tavistock travel to Wellington for a 3:00pm kick off.
