IN division two of the Okehampton and district Table Tennis League, North Wyke finished their season as champions.
With their final game against Milton Abbot, North Wyke needed to win a minimum of seven games to ensure they could not be caught in the title race. North Wyke cruised into a 5-0 lead before Milton Abbot's Ian Osborne beat Jill Dilley in four sets. Steve Granger enjoyed a fine maximum on the night beating Milton's Mark Cousins leaving North Wyke needing just one more game to secure the title. In the game of the night, Jill Dilley faced Michael Blatchford and in a five set thriller won 11-3, 10-12, 11-5, 8-11, 13-11 to win not only the game but also to ensure the title for North Wyke.
Milton rallied to take the final singles and doubles in which Milton's Michael Blatchford and Ian Osborne beat North Wyke's Steve Granger and Paulo Dumont in five sets. North Wyke scores were Paulo Dumont (2), Steve Granger (3), Jill Dilley (2). Milton Abbot scores were Michael Blatchford (0), Ian Osborne (2), Mark Cousins (0).
In division one, the title hopes of table topping Tavistock A were dented as they went down 4-6 at home to The J Team. Naomi Jackson won all three singles to maintain her 100% record for the season although Roger Bowkett did take a game off her before going down in four sets. Roger did go on to beat Nick Jackson in five hard fought sets. Nick rallied to beat Tavistock's Peter Hicks and Fred Phillips leaving The J Team 4-5 up with the doubles to play. Nick and Naomi Jackson came through against Fred Phillips and Roger Bowkett in three sets. Tavistock A scores were, Fred Phillips (1), Roger Bowkett (2), Peter Hicks (1). The J Team scores were Naomi Jackson (3), Nick Jackson (2), Sarah Jackson (0).
Second place side The Young Ones took full advantage of Tavistock's defeat by beating bottom side Anchorage B 10-0 and secure a bonus point to go four clear at the top of the table with only one match to play. Anchorage B scores were Dave Wilson (0), John Watson (0), Jenny Gilbert (0). The Young Ones scores were Edward Haskell (3), George Haskell (3), Andy Moppett (3).
The title race goes down to the last game of the season with The Young Ones facing Okehampton A and Tavistock A facing Bridestowe. Okehampton A are also in with an outside chance of the title.
In the other division one games, Okehampton A beat Anchorage A 9-1. Martin Fowler saved the whitewash by beating Barry Vaughan. Okehampton A scores were Barry Denner (3), Barry Vaughan (2), Tony Howick (3). Anchorage A scores were Martin Fowler (1), Colin Brooker (0), Bob Vella (0). Bridestowe also beat Academy A 8-2. Ben Hill won the only singles for Academy A beating Francis Griffiths in a close match. Tom Pearce and Tom Pengelly teamed up for Academy A to win the doubles against Francis Griffiths and Phil Down in four sets. Academy A scores were Tom Pengelly (0), Tom Pearce (0), Ben Hill (1). Bridestowe scores were Phil Down (3), Mark Tancock (3), Francis Griffiths (2).
