Devon two North Tawton 19 Plympton Victoria 6 IT was the North Tawton pack which laid the foundations for this important win in the last league game of the season. Their work in the set plays gave the three quarters the chance to attack the Plympton Victoria half, although the strong northerly wind led to a number of handling errors by both sides early on. The first score at Taw Meadows went to Plympton, awarded a penalty from 25 metres out, which was converted by fly half Tony King. Tawton came straight back and a good penalty kick by David Fewings set up a lineout five metres from the Plympton line. Keith Jones took the ball cleanly and a strong drive by the forwards drove them over the line. Richard Lethbridge was able to ground the ball at the bottom of the pile of bodies for another of his characteristic tries. A rumbustious break out from Tawton's 22 metre area by wing Alfie May initiated another attack and when the Plympton front row were penalised in a scrum the kick by Fewings gave Tawton a penalty lineout inside the visitors' 22. Jones delivered the ball back to his scrum half Peter Gyde, who passed to Fewings and he broke through for a good try. The conversion was good and Tawton went into a 12-3 lead. Plympton Victoria came back when Tawton were penalised for breaking the bind too early at a set scrum. The penalty kick from about 40 metres was well struck by King, taking his side to 12-6 behind. The final score of the half came following a penalty against Plympton about 10 metres from their try line. Tawton opted for the scrum and number eight Stuart Peters picked up and charged round the blind side. He set up good ball for the following players and it was captain Andy Pyle who picked up and drove over for the try. A good conversion by Fewings took the score to 19-6 at the whistle. The second half was a pale imitation of the first. With the wind now at their backs Tawton failed to capitalise in terms of territory. Plympton Victoria came into their own in the loose play with some impressive driving mauls which pushed Tawton back. Fortunately the home pack was still in control in the set play and drove Plympton off their own scrum ball several times, the reliable front row trio of Pete Wonnacott, Adam Davis and Tom Phillips again anchoring the scrum well. A promising breakout by full back Stuart Bowker and number eight Peters took play into the Plympton area only for the passing to let Tawton down again and the moment passed. Play became disjointed, punctuated regularly by the referee's whistle, and it was Plympton who were gradually working their way back into the match. The North Tawton defence held out well, however, and the half ended with no change to the score at half time. It meant North Tawton have been undefeated in the league at home all season. This win puts North Tawton joint fourth in the league, sharing the position with Ilfracombe. The club is looking forward in anticipation to next season's challenges, and welcomes any rugby players in the area who might like to join them.
