IN MAY, I was one of the Tavistock Town councillors who was re-elected by voters who shared my concerns over the usefulness of changing the character of the traditional hustle and bustle of a market town, by paving over the square, and reducing the traffic flows to two lanes.

I promised with others, that the completed scheme would be monitored so that the effect on the life of the town would be measured and if shown to be detrimental then there would have to be amendments. We will not let this agenda item be hidden.

This 'patio' was meant to bring vitality to the town centre, as well as adding to the viability of the town — it does neither.

It was meant to benefit those with disabilities, members of the Access Group (of which I am secretary), have had several problems, wheel chairs getting stuck in the gullies, the sloping levels, the surfaces of the crossings, further to walk to the public services, no shelter. The visually handicapped still walk their old routes, and they miss the zebra and pelican crossings.

One of the results of monitoring will be to try and show what needs to be altered, and if anyone has concerns, then information can be sent to me or the town clerk.
