St Loyes 5

Okehampton Argyle 0

ANY chance that Argyle had to produce a shock result against the league leaders disappeared after only 60 seconds ? a fine run down the left flank by Kevin Webb saw his pinpoint cross turned into the net by Kenny Smith.

It was then backs to the wall for the next half-hour, against a rampant St Loyes attack.

Sean Sandercock was kept busy in the Argyle goal, making several important saves with sweeper Mike Vernon making timely tackles when under terrific pressure.

The odd attack Argyle managed never really troubled the St Loyes defence. A cross from Paul Yip forced the keeper to come off his line to punch clear.

On 35 minutes St Loyes doubled their score when a fine solo effort from Sean Hellier saw him easily beat two defenders before finding the corner of the net with a good shot.

The last few minutes of the first half saw Argyle under pressure again. James Williams kicked a certain goal off the line with Sandercock beaten, but moments later Kenny Smith scored his second of the match with a delightful lob to put the home side three up at the interval.

Argyle tried hard to get back into the game at the start of the second half. Both Yip and Robbie Sandercock had half-chances but shot wide.

But just before the hour St Loyes sealed their victory when first Kenny Smith completed his hat-trick with another well taken goal, then, following a free kick, Shane Maddock was on hand to score.

This win for St Loyes puts them nine points clear at the top of the league, with only Witheridge in with a chance of catching them.

At the other end of the league, Argyle continue their battle against relegation when they entertain Exeter Civil Service at home this Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
