WITH reference to the letter 'Request for use of tennis court' (Tavistock Times Gazette) last week.
There was little need for the council to be anxious that the public were unable to use the courts during the five-day national tournament. Out of a possible 40 hours' use the tennis club hired only 20 hours, and two to three day's notice was given to the court attendant each time.
It was really terrific to see the six club courts in full use by the juniors and the other two by the public. In fact, the tournament was a great success with over 80 players coming from outside the Tavistock area — some as far away as Bedford, Dorset, the Midlands, North Devon and Cornwall. With their families they enjoyed the swimming pool, putting and shopping in the town, many staying and eating at our restaurants and pubs in the evenings.
The standard of play was high, some three set matches lasting over three hours! Two of these were on the public courts and were playing after 6pm. But on this occasion the public used the club courts so they didn't have to wait for the matches to finish.
With the help of the lovely weather, the five days were a great success for the town, the club and everyone involved.
