A PROPOSED ?landswap? on Whitchurch Down has been kicked into touch following a meeting in the town last week. The swap, requested by Tavistock Golf Club, has been under consideration by Tavistock Town Council for several months. If the move had gone ahead, the golf club would have extended its boundaries to include the football pitch on Whitchurch Down. Town clerk Roger Howard said: ?It was agreed in 1995 that the golf club could use a piece of land outside their lease area for golf practice, but the then council didn?t change the lease and this was discovered during our Best Value review.? Col Howard said two drafts to vary the lease held by the golf club, which pays a peppercorn rent to the town council for its use of the moor, had been drawn up over the last few months. But following a meeting of the full council last Tuesday, members decided, after a behind closed doors debate, not to go ahead with the landswap and the golf club lease will remain as it is.
