CONCERNS have been expressed about a review of the use of in-patient beds at Okehampton and another community hospital in the Mid Devon Primary Care Trust area. Reviews are also underway at Okehampton and Moretonhampstead hospitals of chiropody and the assurance of safety and quality standards within community maternity services. The PCT says it wants a ?clear and accurate picture of how beds at both hospitals are currently being used and whether there is scope to use them more fully?. Neil Gilmour, chairman of the Mid Devon Patient and Public Involvement Forum, which represents patients? interests, recently wrote to the PCT expressing concerns about possible future changes in service provision following the review. Mr Gilmour said these reviews had been accelerated by the PCT?s need to make significant savings: ?We have concerns about this review, but we have been reassured they will listen to us throughout the review process.? Mr Gilmour wrote last month seeking an urgent response from the PCT regarding rumours about the possible closure of Moretonhampstead Hospital and the future of community hospital services. In her letter, PCT chief executive Lesley Dunaway said there had never been any suggestion from the PCT to close Moretonhampstead Hospital and neither had there been any instruction given to the RD&E Hospital to restrict the transport of patients to the two community hospitals. She added: ?The trust is already working with clinicians and other staff to ensure the best possible use of our community hospitals. We also continue to work on a range of innovative proposals to deliver more appropriate care closer to people?s homes.?
