A DOG waste bin in Yelverton which is regularly 'over filling' has led to residents appealing to their parish council to solve the problem.
Briar Tor in Yelverton is a popular destination for dogs and their owners — and as a result, the dog waste bin fills up quickly, with some people resorting to putting the bags on the floor around the bin.
Residents of the area appealed to Buckland Monachorum last year to find a solution, with ideas including a larger or a second bin.
The parish council was also asked if it could re-site the dog waste bin on the road into Briar Tor as dogs had to stand in the road while people disposed of the bagged dog mess.
The council's response was that it was unable to address the situation as there was not the money available to cover any unplanned expenditure that may arise in this financial year.
Parish clerk Debbie Ashton said: 'The bin concerned is not on the council's current list of works requiring attention now or in the foreseeable future.
'However, it was agreed to ask if West Devon Homes would like to partner with the parish council in providing a replacement larger bin as the cost of regularly emptying the existing bin is met by the parish council.
'The residents were unable to secure funding from West Devon Homes for a new bin and the council did not budget for a new bin in 2014/15 as it had to rigorously review its budget to compensate for increasing grounds maintenance costs.'
Residents also asked the council if the bin could be emptied more frequently which was turned down by the council as it could not accommodate this due to the budget.
At the parish council's full committee meeting on January 28, the councillors discussed the issue of the dog waste bin at Briar Tor once again.
Chairman Cllr Sue Britton said the council had been advised to replace the bin or to increase the number of times it was emptied.
'We should let people know that they don't have to put dog waste just in a dog poo bin but they can put in litter bins — any bin would do.
Cllr Dave Butland said: 'It is very often over filling. There are a lot of dogs there. I go through often and it's rare to not see a dog as it's highly populated.'
After the meeting Debbie Ashton added: 'Dog waste can be disposed of in any bin — and there are several in Yelverton — and dog owners should take their bagged dog waste home if a bin isn't available.'
