MEMBERS of the Lamerton branch of the Royal British Legion gathered at the village's Blacksmith's Arms recently to celebrate a milestone in their history.
The Lamerton branch of the legion was formed in 1933 and is part of the Tavy Group.
Lamerton branch president George Boucher said: 'Originally, around 20 branches were involved in the Tavy Group but, sadly, as the years have passed, most of the branches have been more or less disbanded and there are now only about three or four active branches, although some may still cover the Poppy Appeal collection.'
Mr Boucher said that over the years various fundraising social activities had taken place, including whist drives, draws, sponsored walks, dinners and other events. The income from these has allowed the branch to provide Christmas parties for village children and to donate coal and other gifts to ex-service families where needed.
'At the end of October each year we always undertake our Poppy Appeal with a house-to-house collection in the parish of Lamerton.
'It is important to say a big thank you to all the collecting volunteers who partake in the appeal and in particular to Valerie for allocating and sorting the poppy trays. The generosity of local business people and general public is truly overwhelming and we are so grateful to them all.'
Mr Boucher expressed thanks on behalf of the branch to the chairman Den Sutton, secretary and treasurer Colin Stephens, standard bearer Gerald Cramp, Poppy Appeal organiser Col Austin and all members for their support in keeping the branch alive.
He said: 'Two other thank yous must be mentioned — Robert for allowing the Blacksmith's Arms to be used for meetings free of charge and our honorary auditor.'
