Okehampton Ladies Seconds 1

Callington Ladies 0

THE young Okehampton team faced a more mature and experienced team, but they cleverly used their nifty stick skills and speed around the pitch to their advantage.

The Okehampton midfield blocked any Callington advances in the centre of the pitch with strong tackling from Brieze Read and Sophie Whiteley.  Sophie Cunnington found holes in the Callington defence with her lightening runs and sharp passes.

Despite pressurising the Callington circle the Okehampton attack could not penetrate the solid Callington defence and the game was still goal-less at half time.

The second half saw Callington play with renewed vigour, but tight marking from youngsters Willemijn Rademaker and Tara Davidson, sharing the left half position, cut out the Callington right attack.

Jo Drake, in her return game for the club, organised the defence well, leading by example with some decisive tackles and strong clearances.  Kim Davey, playing her debut game in goal for Okehampton, was only tested by a couple of Callington shots — Davey made no mistake in powerfully kicking the ball and clearing it out of the circle.

Okehampton's continuous hard work and clever team play was rewarded when they took advantage of a penalty corner.  Brieze Reed's shot on goal was deflected off the keeper's pads and Amanda Sim was perfectly positioned to slot the ball into the back of the Callington net.

Okehampton's player of the match was awarded to Sophie Cunnington.
