Chairman?s Cup First Round Lamerton 4 Lifton 0 LAMERTON progressed through to the next round of the cup against local rivals Lifton in a game played at Launceston?s Pennygillam ground under floodlights. Play was fairly even in the first half ? the only goal coming when Steve Gibbings beat a couple of players following a goalmouth scramble. Gibbings put a left foot shot into the corner of the net. The lead was increased in the second half when Dan Healy put Paul Cowling through to get the all-important second goal dampening the spirits of the young and lively Lifton team. Lee Wickett set up Cowling for the third goal with the roles reversed for the fourth when Wickett himself scored. It was a workmanlike performance from Lamerton with Gibbings excellent in midfield and the back five rarely looking in danger. Devon Intermediate Cup Quarter Final Upottery 1 Lamerton 2 LAMERTON?S Second cup match in four days set near Honiton saw a team coach trip to play opposing Devon and Exeter side Upottery. Arriving early, Lamerton had extra time to suss out the extreme windy conditions on a small sloping pitch. Captain Simon Breyley won the toss and decided to face the gales in the first half. In fact Lamerton created the better chances of the first period, particularly Dave Byworth?s shot, which hit the post and side netting. Upottery were not utilising the elements and with keeper Pete Daniel clutching everything that came his way Lamerton were looking like favourites. However, some slack defending on the edge of the box invited a curling wind assisted shot from an Upottery striker to make it 1-0. Lamerton came back impressively though and vitally equalised just before the break. Dan Healy played the ball into the run of striker Pete Broomfield who showed strength and poise to beat his man and bend a terrific shot into the bottom corner. Lamerton?s confidence was boosted and in the second half they mounted 80% of the play on the Upottery goal. Frustration did creep in with the lack of expected goals and the wind so strong making play very difficult. Lamerton finally went ahead mid way through the second half when a cross from the wing into the box packed full of players, somehow fell to Zac Beesley who could not miss from two yards. Upottery fought back toward the end with two good chances, notably a fiercely deflected drive producing a fantastic reaction save from man of the match Daniel, but in the end it was a comfortable progression through to the semi-final. Much appreciation must go to the many Lamerton fans who made the long trip. This week: away to Pelynt in the league. 2.30 kick off.
