FOLLOWING the success of the new road layout at the Plymouth Road entrance to Tavistock, Devon County Council has begun two more schemes to improve road safety in the town.
An 'urban gateway' is being built at the entrance to Whitchurch Road at the junction with Dolvin Road and a 'rural gateway' between Anderton Road and Grenofen.
These are designed to reduce the speed of traffic through Whitchurch Road, particularly past Whitchurch School, where a 20mph speed limit will also be introduced during drop-off and pick-up times.
A new mini-roundabout and road markings were completed a fortnight ago at the junction of Pixon Lane and Plymouth Road — identified as a dangerous area following a number of injuries in recent years.
A Devon County Council spokeswoman said the benefits were already clear with school buses now able to turn into Crowndale Road more easily between breaks in the traffic flow into the town centre.
She said this had, in turn, led to a reduction in traffic queues in Callington Road, making it safer for children negotiating the road at the crossing point.
The Pixon Lane scheme cost £17,500. The Urban Gateway, expected to be completed this week, will cost £8,000, and the Rural Gateway is expected to cost £16,000, including a new section of footway. This will be finished the week after.
