A NEW name to take note of ? North Oakes. North Tawton have for a few years, tried to raise a second team, now North Tawton committee member Norman Gillard has come up with the inspired idea of uniting with Okehampton III who were having similar difficulties.

The result is North Oakes. All games to be played under the new banner and fixtures to be shared between the two clubs? grounds. And, at last the players from both clubs will get a well deserved run out with as many Saturdays as possible in the following season.

In their first game North Oakes started strongly although due to the fact many players had not played together it was also a little ragged. But the enthusiasm shone through, and they had Saracens pinned in their own half for the first 30 minutes.

This was due to a good forward domination with some excellent runs by centre Dave North and winger Tom Davis.

North Oakes continued the pressure after the break and were at last awarded a penalty, duly taken by outside half Joe Fewings.

Despite a rally by Saracens North Oakes remained in charge. It was no surprise when centre Colin Ewen finally broke through to score an excellent try under the posts, converted by Joe Fewings.

There were a few forays into the North Oakes half by Saracens but the defence by forwards and backs alike stood firm and in front of a sizeable crowd they ran out deserved winners.

This week North Oakes take on Bideford III at North Tawton, kick-off 3pm.

NORTH Tawton started this game well, playing with the wind, keeping Saracens pinned in their own half.

The set scrums set up many a chance for the visitors? back divisions, but they failed to capitalise despite some excellent runs by outside half Phil Wale.

North Tawton began to lose the lineouts and with more possession the home side began to build a platform which enabled them to release their backs.

With some excellent wide rugby their wingers were used to their full extent and began to run in the tries.

It was a little flattering to Saracens that they went in at the interval 14-0 up.

The second half was a different story and North Tawton failed to get their game together.

North Tawton play Civil Services away, kick-off 3pm, in the league.
