AN East Cornwall country park has recently been designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Kit Hill, famous for its fine views and fascinating history, can now add this accolade to its recently announced Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Award. The Local Nature Reserve designation offers protection to a range of species and habitats on the hill in addition to securing the provision of educational and recreational opportunities for the surrounding local communities. Owned by Cornwall Council and managed by Cormac Solutions Ltd, Kit Hill was designated a Local Nature Reserve under section 21 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. To celebrate the designation, Cormac Solutions Ltd, Cornwall Council and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, through the Helping Hands for Heritage project, joined together to offer a day of historic and nature-related activities at the end of last month. Cornwall councillor for Callington, Andrew Long, said: 'It is great news to hear about the Local Nature Reserve designation. Kit Hill has a long history with Callington and the surrounding parishes and it is good to see that we are going to protect its natural heritage for the coming generations.' Anyone who would like to visit Kit Hill and learn more about the heritage of the area can join an event on Sunday, August 24. This will include a guided walk with the ranger and local experts looking at some of the main archaeological features and management. Meet in the Adit Car Park at 10am, have lunch at the summit at 12.30pm and either do half the walk or continue walking until around 3pm.
