A NEW site is to be sought for public toilets at Leg O? Mutton due to the forthcoming termination of a lease agreement with the Maristow Estate. The estate has served notice to terminate the licences for the toilets on its land at Leg O? Mutton and Bedford Bridge following a review of its land and property holdings. Members of West Devon Borough Council?s environment and community committee were told at their meeting last week the current arrangements would be extended month-to-month while negotiations took place with the council and Dartmoor National Park. Both toilets have been leased for a peppercorn fee from Maristow Estate since the 1970s. The company is seeking a new lease agreement for the Bedford Bridge toilet that provides a more commercial rental income. It also wants to demolish the ?dilapidated? Leg O?Mutton toilet block and replace it on a new site on land which it can sell to the borough council or lease under similar terms as the one at Bedford Bridge. Councillors were told the toilets at Leg O?Mutton had been closed over the winter but officers were anxious the facility was open again for the summer season. It was hoped some repair work could be done before the spring as it was unlikely a long-term solution would be in place by then. Buckland Monachorum Parish Council was concerned about the toilets and felt they should continue in some form, the committee was told. It was suggested they could be located near the new children?s playground.
