PATIENTS across West Devon can rate their experience and care at GP surgeries through a new online service.
Available at http://www.nhs.uk">www.nhs.uk, patients in areas such as Tavistock and Okehampton can post comments on their surgery and talk about their experiences.
The NHS believes the information will allow patients to choose which of their local surgeries is right for them.
Key information on opening times, appointments and specialised services is included. Patients will also be able to read other people's comments on the surgery. The scheme follows a similar one launched by the NHS in the summer which compares Devon hospitals and aims to improve patient service. Improvements already include extended opening hours at Devon surgeries.
Paul Baker, NHS Devon's head of primary care development, said: 'As we open up increased choice in primary care, it is vital we equip patients with a wide range of information to make the right choice for them. This new service allows both patients and GP practices in the county to see the patient's view on what they are doing well and what might be further improved.'
Dr Peter Swinyard, chairman of the Family Doctor Association, said: 'The Family Doctor Association supports this initiative and believes patient feedback on GP services is an effective way of driving up the standards of primary care even further.'
