EXTRA seating may soon be installed by the new hard surface tennis courts in Tavistock's Meadows.

The old grass courts are currently being resurfaced by the tennis club as part of a £144,260 facilities improvement project, thanks to a Lottery grant of nearly £94,000 last year.

Trees have been felled by the town council along the path by the courts — at last week's meeting of the council's properties committee, Cllr Norma Woodcock suggested seats should be installed by the path.

She said: 'It's really opened up — I would like to suggest at least one or two seats along there. It's in the sun, it's very nice and people needn't go right into the Meadows.'

Town clerk Roger Howard agreed to investigate the proposal.

Improvements planned by the tennis club include extending the pavilion to provide toilets and changing rooms, plus floodlights for the new courts.

The new all-weather courts will be available for use by tennis club members, the public and local schools. Increasing the courts to six means the club will have more all-weather courts than any other club in Devon.
