AN innovative new partnership has been drawn up by a group of West Devon primary schools, with the aim of boosting pupils' skills and learning.
The 'Moorland Schools Partnership' will work collectively on future local projects.
'Pupils will have opportunities to develop skills across the curriculum, always aiming for excellence.'
On Thursday, June 11, the group of schools, which include Lamerton, Gulworthy, St Andrews, Bickleigh Down, Mary Tavy and Brentor and Milton Abbot came together for the first time for a 'gifted and talented' art day.
The day, which offered three art workshops for children, gave staff a chance to discuss exciting projects for the year ahead over a cream tea.
The first workshop centred around Rembrandt's self portrait 'wearing a white feathered bonnet'.
The self portrait, painted in 1635, was on display for children on the day.
Only recently having been discovered and authenticated, the portrait, which was originally thought to have been painted by one of his students, is now worth £30 million.
Children were then tasked with painting their own self portraits.
The second workshop was led by Naomi Vincent from Nature Make, in which natural materials were used to make a 'magical dwelling'.
The final workshop was a teamwork based activity, challenging children to create dens in the grounds of Buckland Abbey.
A competition to design a new logo for the Moorland Schools Partnership was also running, the winner was Issey Hillman from Mary Tavy.
Melody added: 'We have already planned music, art and maths projects for the year ahead. These will utilise strengths of teachers across the partnership. Staff will have many opportunities to enhance and develop subject leadership.
'This year we have formed working parties to enhance provision in outdoor education, RE, art, computing and early years. We look forward to the year ahead and the innovative and creative ideas which will ensue.'
