A NEW pilot Shopmobility service is being launched in Tavistock on Tuesday, December 1.
The service will be launched in time for Christmas shopping in the town. People will be able to hire mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking aids.
The aim is to help people with a disability get out and about around Tavistock.
To book a scooter, phone Kevin on 01822 617525 and as long as a scooter is available he will book it.
Users will need to take with them a form of identity and a blue badge, if they have one.
Training will be given in how to use the scooter safely.
Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS) is launching the project in partnership with Devon County Council community transport team.
Tavistock mayor Mandy Govier said: 'For TASS to be able to offer a Shopmobility facility at the Anchorage Centre, where they have a level site beside the bus station and a car park, is an excellent way to be able to help all people and their families with a physical disability.
'I hope this pilot is a success and becomes a permanent facility for the residents of Tavistock and beyond.'
Town resident Sylvia, who uses Shopmobility in other areas, said it was 'a marvelous service for people who have disabilities'.
'It helps get me out and about, allowing me to shop for myself, meet friends and enjoy just having freedom,' she said.
Andy Lyle, TASS manager, said it was a wonderful opportunity to try Shopmobility in Tavistock and, if a need for this service could be proved, to develop a permanent facility in the town, helping people to get out and about.
He asked anyone who had a mobility scooter they did not use, or a wheelchair they no longer needed, to get in touch with TASS on 01822 616958.
