A LADIES and gents clothing firm is set to take over the former Woolworths store in Tavistock, the owner's agents confirmed this week.
Alder King said an offer had been made for the tenancy and completion was due to take place at the end of next week.
Retail partner for Alder King, Nigel Gibbons, said the property was first marketed at the beginning of February and there was a fairly good level of interest which was surprising in the current economic climate.
'When we put it to the market we indicated that it was a prime position in a very successful retail town,' he said. 'It is also a big pitch and has a service yard to the rear.
'We had interest from multiples and local firms mostly in the clothing sector but had it under offer fairly quickly and close to the asking price to a locally-based organisation.'
Peter Barefoot from Alder King, who was speaking at the public inquiry into the Sainsbury proposal on employment issues this week, said it was 'absolutely remarkable' for a shop to be let after just three months in a recession.
'It speaks volumes for the demand and the viability that is perceived for a town like Tavistock. It is a precious little place that people want to be part of.'
