MED Theatre is planning the creation of a new community play North Dartmoor. Based on historical Norman clearance of a Saxon village to create a deer park, the story begins with the documented release of slaves at a crossroads on the high moor in Saxon times, counterpointed against the intense feelings of an impoverished young couple negotiating with a modern-day landlord. It examines concepts of ownership, good and bad, and how the way we treat property and land is inextricably bound up with the way we treat each other. The play will develop around the ideas of John Young who was born on North Dartmoor and still lives above Okehampton. Anyone who is interested in getting involved should contact Mark Beeson (tel 01647 441356, email [email protected]">[email protected] by January 5. The rehearsal process will be based in Moretonhampstead. l MED Theatre is a community arts organisation, dedicated to the promotion of local identity through original theatre and other related cultural work relevant to Dartmoor National Park and its vicinity. Its work explores issues around living in National Parks. It places a particular emphasis on young people who are often isolated by poor public transport when they live at a distance from market towns, and tend to be neglected in conventional thinking about National Parks. MED Theatre draws its material from Dartmoor but aims to serve as a model for other locality-based UK cultural organisations outside London, particularly in rural areas, and particularly in National Parks.
