LOCAL history lovers can now get their hands on a new book and DVD documenting the last 50 years in Hatherleigh.

Compiled by town residents Dennis Bater, Alan Beaman and Brian Abell, the 75-page book, entitled 'Hatherleigh: 1962-2012', looks at the history of organisations, institutions and clubs in Hatherleigh over the last 50 years, and tracks their progress.

Members of each group have helped contribute to each passage, with ceased groups like Hatherleigh WI and Hatherleigh Twinning Association also getting a mention.

A 30-minute DVD is also included with each copy of the book, with footage from town events and meetings throughout the last 50 years.

Dennis Bater explained the origins of the book: 'We were approached by the Community Council of Devon, who are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year.

'They have asked several communities across the county to think of unique ways to celebrate that landmark.

'We hit on the idea of a book looking at the last 50 years in Hatherleigh.

'We have looked at as many of the community groups and events as we can remember, and tried to cover them all and paint a picture of the town.

'It is thanks to funding from the lottery and the Community Council of Devon that we have been able to put the book together, and we are very grateful for that.'

The book launch takes place at 7pm on March 12 in Old Schools, before the Hatherleigh History Society meeting.

People can turn up, buy a copy of the book for £6, and stay to hear a talk from Simon Dell about Dartmoor Prison.

After the launch, the book will be on sale in shops around the town, including the Post Office and the Salar Gallery.

Proceeds raised by the book are being split between the Hatherleigh History Society and Hatherleigh Community Centre.
