TAVISTOCK Hospital took delivery of two new beds for its minor injuries unit — thanks to the generosity of Tavistock Hospital League of Friends, particularly a much loved former member.

The League of Friends enhances NHS-funded developements and on this occasion the donation was given from money received in memory of Joan Trethewey.

The total cost of the beds and accessories was £8,500 with the beds costing £3,200 each. In addition, three sensors were bought, at £700 each, which raise an alarm call to the nursing staff for patients who are not mobile.

Lesley Gibson, on behalf of the friends, said: 'These beds will offer much more adaptability and comfort, and will make it easier for nursing staff to deliver the necessary treatment.

'The older beds have been given to Operation Sunshine and it is hoped that they will be used in hospitals overseas. This is a full circle of help from charities.'

A donation of £7,269 had been given to the friends in memory of the late Joan Trethewey, a former member of the Friends, who died in December, 2011.

Joan had been a nurse during the second world war and spent 25 years as a member of Tavistock League of Friends. There will be a plaque in her memory at the hospital.
