FAMILIES looking for affordable housing in the Yelverton area are being invited to an information day to learn more.

The awareness day is being held on Tuesday, July 17 at the Liverty Sheltered Scheme in Briar Tor.

Plymouth Community Homes, Plymouth’s largest housing provider, is managing the 11 new-build homes – a mix of one, two and three bed homes – at Briar Tor.

The homes will be offered for affordable rent to people from Yelverton and the surrounding parishes of Meavy, Walkhampton, Horrabridge and Whitchurch on the Devon Home Choice register.

They are being built by Classic Builders, which is also building 32 homes for open market sale on the site.

Next Tuesday is an awareness event for people to find out more about the type of homes, which will be ready in the autumn.

Tina Olver, Senior Development Officer for Plymouth Community Homes, said: ‘After years of developing new homes for hundreds of people in Plymouth, we’re pleased to now be providing homes for local people in West Devon.

‘This event is intended to make people aware that the homes will be available in the coming months and will give people the chance to ask any questions they may have.’

PCH housing staff will be attending the event alongside representatives from West Devon Borough Council – the local housing authority – and Dartmoor National Park – responsible for planning.

Cllr Philip Sanders, Leader of West Devon Borough Council, said: ‘I’m really pleased that local people are being offered the opportunity to find out about homes with affordable rent within their local area.  I urge residents on the Devon Home Choice Register, in those locations listed above, to go along to the awareness day to find out more.’

Dan Janota, Head of Forward Planning and Economy at Dartmoor National Park, said: ‘Affordable housing is a priority for communities in the National Park and we’re proud to have enabled this development to come forward. We’re keen to see these new homes go to those in need within the community, and add to the affordable housing stock for Yelverton for the future.’

Advice will be given on housing benefit and there will also be a team there from Devon Home Choice.

The awareness event takes place at the Liverty Sheltered Scheme’s common room at Briar Tor from 3pm to 7pm.
