CHILDREN and staff at Okehampton Primary School enjoyed an action packed week of nature activities.

The All Creatures Great and Small week kicked off with a visit by Pottery maker Jennie Hale from Okehampton, who brought in her night catch of moths and bugs.

The children were encouraged to carefully observe the details of the insects before drawing them.

The pupils enjoyed meeting Golden Eagle, Samson, following his recent appearance on the BBC's The One Show, and there was also a surprise appearance of a family of wild peregrines flying over the school field during the falconry display.

Other highlights of the week included Reptobug, who enthusiastically showed foundation and key stage one children his collection of large reptiles and bugs.

BBC wildlife presenter Johnny Kingdom finished off the week with a lively discussion about the local wildlife in and around the town.

He said: 'Okehampton Primary is a great school. I love the way all the nature displays are set out and it is great that they have their own environmental area.'

In between the outdoor events, the pupils enjoyed nature activities, including pond dipping, observational art and creative writing.

Headteacher of the school Brian Cunningham said the themed week was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to learn from first hand experience.

He said: 'I am very grateful to Frances Rickwood who put the programme together and to Okehampton Educational Foundation for providing us with the funding.

'It was a week of golden moments.'
